Les femmes peintres
In the late 19th century, many French and foreign women painters worked as professional artists in Paris and exhibited at the Salon, the annual show of contemporary art. Unlike their male colleagues, they had to cope with various prejudices, especially the accusation of dilettantism, and these influenced their stylistic choices. On the other hand, their personal writings (letters, memoirs, diaries) emphasize the true modernity of their lives and their way of thinking.
